Our Community of Support

Asher's journey is not walked alone. We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from our family, friends, and various organizations who stand with us in this fight against Fibrolamellar Carcinoma.

As caregivers to a child with cancer, you are going to have plenty of doubts, and you are going to have plenty of moments when you feel helpless, lost, or confused, but it is important to realize that there is help out there. There are families out there going through the same things, and even some families who have come through the other side of the haze who can offer hope, support, and encouragement. It is our desire to be that encouragement to others, although we are still in this journey ourselves, we have learned that while this journey is a hard one, and a weary one, it is not an impossible one.

Many communities have helped us in different ways, and we just wanted to use this space to thank them and honor them, and encourage you to support them in whatever ways you can because they have really been incredible blessings to us as we have faced the challenges of childhood cancer.

Fibrolamellars of the World Unite!

Technically you can’t meet these people unless you have been affected by Fibrolamellar Carcinoma because it’s a closed group reserved for FLC patients and caregivers, but take my word for it when I say they’re amazing.

I really struggled to decide where to put FibroFighters on this website because not enough can really be said about them. They were our initial point of hope when Children’s hospital couldn’t offer much – Asher being the first patient Children’s at Birmingham had ever treated with FLC. FibroFighters community of caregivers, patients, and doctors is really an outstanding group when it comes to helping parents and patients with everything from answers to all the many questions, taking care of certain tests involving FLC and tracking FLC, and interceding between the insurance and oncologists. We truly could not do this without FibroFighters, and we are extremely grateful for them and their devotion to ending this terrible disease.

Fibrolamellar Carcinoma Foundation (FCF)

This community was founded by an FLC patient who lost his life to the disease in 2010, and is continued by his surviving family. They sponsor a lot of FLC research, and offer events and resources to researchers and FLC patients throughout the year. It is through these ‘free to patient’ events that we have been able to meet a lot of fellow FLC patients and caregivers, so we are so very grateful for those opportunities and connections.

Children's Hospital of Birmingham, AL

I’d like to say it has all been smooth sailing at Children’s hospital, but the truth is it hasn’t. That being said, it is also true that Children’s hospital saved my son’s life. We have experienced our share of frustration at Children’s Hospital with everything from insensitive surgeons, callous technicians, incompetent technicians, and poor hygiene. Still it would be unfair to mention those things without also mentioning Asher’s amazing oncology team, the surgeon who operated on Asher’s liver, saving his life, the surgeon who operated on Asher’s leg, improving the quality of his life, and the many nurses who are competent and good with teenagers.

Enon Baptist Church

The story of how we started going to Enon Baptist Church, and eventually became members, is amusing to me – but I’ll spare the details except to say their people really care about people. I believe they are really intentional about being the hands and feet of Jesus, and they have been an amazing blessing to Asher and my family in many ways. Special thanks to Brother Donny, and Pastor Zac.

They were praying with us from the beginning. This church has been a blessing in so many ways with their donations, help, and support.

Another amazing church that I am happy to add to this list. We have received so many prayers, love offerings, and support from this community. There are members of this church we have never met in person who have gone the extra mile to raise awareness for Asher’s Journey. We are so grateful for the love and support they have shown and continue to show.

So thankful for the IBEW and their donations, prayers, and support through Asher’s treatments. This community works hard for their families and for their brothers in the trade, and I am so grateful to them, not only for being there during these hard times, but also for being there in the beginning when our family was just me, Adrienne, and baby Asher.

If Physical Therapy sounds like fun to you, either you’ve got masochistic issues or you have been to RegenPT. The whole staff was really great for Asher after his leg surgery, and did more than help him walk on his own again, they also made his time there enjoyable. He was actually disappointed that he no longer had to take physical therapy. So, I’ll gladly add them here to Asher’s community (even though he’s longer on PT) because they gave so much life to him not only through the training, but with their great attitudes and encouragement.

Our Facebook community! This is such an amazing team of supporters and prayer warriors. We read every comment, and you will probably never realize just what it means to us. So many have been with us from the beginning, have grieved with us, have rejoiced with us, and have laughed with us. We are so very thankful for your love, prayers, and support. Please, check out Asher’s Journey on Facebook, where you can meet and join this amazing group of people!

This list, in no particular order, is just a shout out to these incredible communities that have meant so much to us as a family as we deal with the challenges of a stage 4 childhood cancer diagnosis.
If you feel like I have left out a community that should be included here (because I am by no means perfect), please contact us and let me know. For individuals, we honor them on our Asher’s Team page.
Thank you to all of these communities! Please know you have been a blessing and made a difference!
